Side Effects

Side Effects

Managing high blood sugar can help avoid kidney damage, loss of limbs, sexual dysfunction, nerve problems, or blindness.

With proper diabetes management, you can lessen the possibility of experiencing a stroke or heart attack.

The following side effects may occur low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), allergy activation (see allergic reactions tab), shaking, sudden sweating, hunger, blurred vision, tingling hands/feet, dizziness, injection site reaction may occur such as redness, pain, and irritation, weight gain, low potassium, cramps, irregular heartbeat, fatigue/weakness.

Serious side effects from Basaglar aren’t familiar, but they can occur. Call your doctor right away if you have serious side effects. Call 911 if your symptoms feel life-threatening or if you think you have a medical emergency.

Serious side effects and their symptoms can include the following: headache, confusion, anxiety, drowsiness, hunger, irritable mood (being easily upset), sweating, fast heartbeat, seizures, coma, fatigue (lack of energy), feeling weak, muscle cramps, abnormal heart rhythm, respiratory failure, and paralysis.

If any of these side effects persist, contact your pharmacist or doctor immediately as they may adjust your dose.

It is a good habit to carry around sweets (honey, candy, table sugar) or glucose tablets to treat low blood sugar.

Try to eat your meals on a regular schedule and avoid skipping meals. Ask your pharmacist or doctor what to do if you happen to miss a meal.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects but contact your doctor immediately for medical advice if you should experience any of these side effects.

Allergic Reactions

Allergic Reactions

In rare cases, a patient may be allergic to an insulin product. Severe insulin allergies may be life-threatening. If you think you have an allergic reaction, seek medical help immediately. Signs of insulin allergy include rashes all over your body,  shortness of breath, wheezing (trouble breathing), palpitations (rapid heartbeat), sweating, low blood pressure.

The active ingredient in Basaglar is insulin glargine (rDNA origin).  The nonmedicinal ingredients in the 3 mL cartridges and KwikPen are glycerin, m-cresol, zinc oxide, and water for injection. Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are added for pH adjustment.

If you experience a severe allergic reaction, please visit your nearest healthcare facility.

Usage

Usage

Insulin glargine may be used along with other short-acting insulin products and other diabetes medications.

It’s essential to read the leaflet, which comes with the Basaglar Kwikpen U-100 insulin pen, or speak to your pharmacist before starting using it. If you have any questions, you shouldn’t hesitate to talk to your pharmacist, nurse, doctor, or diabetes educator.

Your dosage should be advised by your doctor based on your health and condition.

It’s essential to measure each dose carefully as directed by your doctor. Even the slightest change in the amount of insulin can harm your blood sugar levels.

Clean the skin with a swab and alcohol before injecting insulin.

Medication should be injected under the skin (subcutaneously) of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arms once daily or as advised by your doctor.

Insulin glargine can be used once daily, any time of the day, before meals. Try to keep application during the same time every day, such as before breakfast or dinner time.

Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions, diet, exercise program, and treatment plan to ensure the best results.

Missed Dose

Missed Dose

If you have missed a dose of Basaglar or if you have not injected enough insulin, your blood sugar level may become too high (hyperglycemia). Check your blood sugar frequently. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose, as this may lead to an overdose (see next tab).

Overdose

Overdose

If you have injected too much Basaglar, your blood sugar level may become too low (hypoglycemia). Check your blood sugar frequently. In general, to prevent hypoglycemia, you must eat more food and monitor your blood sugar.

Hypoglycemia may occur due to an excess of insulin relative to food intake, energy expenditure, or both.

In case of a drug overdose, contact a healthcare professional, hospital emergency department, or regional Poison Control Centre immediately, even if there are no symptoms.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

If you are planning to have a baby, are pregnant, or are nursing a baby, consult your doctor. Good control of diabetes is especially important for you and your unborn baby. Pregnancy may make managing your diabetes more difficult.

Storage

Storage

Unopened Basaglar cartridges or KwikPens should be stored in a refrigerator, between 2°C – 8°C. Keep Basaglar away from direct heat and light. Basaglar should not be stored in the freezer and should not be allowed to freeze. If Basaglar freezes, discard it.

Opened (In Use) Cartridge or KwikPen: The opened Basaglar cartridge or KwikPen in use should be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days away from direct heat and light. If there is any remaining insulin after 28 days, discard it. The opened cartridge in use must never be removed from and reinserted into the injection pen. If Basaglar freezes discard it.

Do not use a Basaglar cartridge or KwikPen after the expiration date stamped on the label or if it is cloudy or contains visible particles.

Disposal

Disposal

Put your used needles in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container right away after use. Do not throw away (dispose of) loose needles in your household trash.

If you do not have an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container, you may use a household container that is: made of heavy-duty plastic, can be closed with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid (without sharps being able to come out), upright and stable during use,  leak-resistant, and properly labeled to warn of hazardous waste inside the container.

When your sharps disposal container is almost full, you will need to follow your community guidelines for the right way to dispose of your sharps disposal container. There may be state or local laws about how you should throw away used needles and syringes.

Do not dispose of your used sharps disposal container in your household trash unless your community guidelines permit this. Do not recycle your used sharps disposal container.

The used Pen may be discarded in your household trash after you have removed the needle.
