Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens are lightweight, small pen that’s prefilled with mealtime insulin. It does need to be refrigerated after the first use, which means you can take it anywhere, and due to its small size, it’s easy to carry. They also are re-fillable through replacing the cartridges.
Once you start using Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens, it should be stored at room temperature, below 86°F (30°C), and must be used within ten days or be discarded, even if it still contains Humalog. For more information, please see the storage tab.
The Humalog Mix 25 Kwikpens (100IU/ml) is an insulin pen that contains a combination of two medications, insulin lispro (25%), which has a fast onset of action, and insulin lispro protamine (75%) that has a prolonged duration of action. Together, these two medicines ensure consistent and rapid sugar control throughout the day by facilitating the re-up take of sugar in muscle and fat cells and suppressing sugar production in the liver.

The Humalog Mix25 KwikPen is usually prescribed alongside a long-acting type of insulin by doctors. It effectively manages blood sugar levels for type 1 and types two diabetes to avoid diabetes-related complications.
Warnings and Precautions
Notify your doctor if you currently have any liver, kidney, or heart problems before starting treatment.

Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens are injected under the skin (subcutaneously). Inject in the abdomen for faster absorption. Insulin can also be injected into the skin of the upper legs and arms or buttocks. After injection, do not massage the area of injection.
It is taken 15 minutes before your meal or within 20 minutes of starting your meal.
It is essential to monitor blood sugar levels regularly and share results with your doctor to provide the correct dosage based on your individual needs.
Rotate injection sites to prevent hard lumps from forming at injection sites.
Low blood sugar or hypoglycemia may result when taken with other antidiabetic medicines, skipping or delaying meals, or consuming alcohol.
Carry a sugar source such as glucose tablets, candy, or sugary drinks to relieve hypoglycemia immediately.
Available insulin vials or cartridges can be stored at room temperature for up to 4 weeks. Unopened vials should refrigerate at 2°C–8°C.

How to inject insulin?

Preparation of Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens
You should rotate the Humalog Mix 25 Kwikpen in the palm of your hand ten times and inverted 180 degrees ten times before use to re-suspend the insulin until it appears cloudy or milky. Do not use until the contents are mixed. Do not shake the device too hard as this may cause frothing can interfere with dose-measuring. Examine the device for any particles floating inside, giving a frosted appearance.
How to prime your Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens
Priming your pen is required. If this is not done correctly, you may receive too much or too little insulin. To do this, turn the dial two units. Hold your pen with the needle pointing up. Tap the cartridge holder to get air bubbles to the top. Push the dose knob until the dosage window stops at “0”. Hold dose knob and count to five. You should then see the insulin at the tip of the needle.
What to do if the dose knob becomes stiff or rigid to push?
Pushing the dose knob on the pen slowly will make it easier to inject. Put on a new needle and prime the pen if the needle is blocked.

Other common side effects include allergic reactions at the injection site, lipodystrophy (skin thickening or pits at the injection site), rashes, and itching.
The following drugs may require an increase of insulin: Corticosteroids, Isoniazid, Estrogens, Oral contraceptives, Certain lipid-lowering drugs (i.e., niacin), Phenothiazines, and Thyroid replacement therapy.
The following drugs can decrease insulin requirements: Angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors, oral antidiabetic agents, salicylates, angiotensin II receptor blocking agents, and certain antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), beta-adrenergic blockers, inhibitors of pancreatic function, beta-adrenergic blockers may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia for some, sulfa antibiotics and alcohol.
Most side effects do not require medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.

Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens are generally safe to take during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown that there are little to no side effects to developing babies. However, there have been limited human studies. Insulin requirements usually fall during the first trimester and increase during the second and third trimesters. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant.
It is also safe during breastfeeding. Human studies have shown that the medication does not pass through breast milk in a significant amount that would be harmful to the baby. During breastfeeding, your doctor may recommend adjusting dosage requirements, diet, or both.
Before the first use, store your Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens in a refrigerator (2° C – 8° C). Do not freeze.
Keep your Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens in use at room temperature (below 30° C) and discard it after 28 days. Please do not put it near heat or in the sun. Do not keep the KwikPen that you are using in the fridge. The KwikPen should not be stored with the needle attached.
Keep out of sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the label and the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not use this medicine if you notice clumps of material are present or if solid white particles stick to the bottom or wall of the cartridge, giving it a frosted appearance. Check each time you inject yourself.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
