Mounjaro – an injectable prescription drug – is approved for the management of blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes. This medication is only avaible to patients who are aged at least 10 years and is taken on a once-weekly basis. Doses may be gradually increased over time. The increase in dose should only be done under medical supervision – especially since some side effects can occur with higher doses. It can be found in the form of an injectable pen or a single-dose vial.
Mounjaro doses start at 2.5 mg and 5 mg per 0.5 mL. Patients usually are on the lower dose for at least four weeks before their dose is increased to the 5 mg/0.5 mL dose. Doses may be increased at regular intervals by a healthcare provider if additional blood sugar management is needed. Patients who need additional control may have their doses further increased in increments of 2.5 mg/0.5 mL after each four-week period. This includes 7.5 mg/0.5 mL and 10 mg/0.5 mL doses if additional management is found necessary. There are also higher doses of 12.5 mg/0.5 mL available. The highest dose available is 15 mg/0.5 mL. The doses prescribed to the patients may vary.
Mounjaro pens can be administered by:

Patients using Mounjaro should be aware that this medication has been linked to pancreatitis in rare cases in some clinical studies. Patients who suspect they may be suffering from pancreatitis while taking the medication should stop taking the medication immediately. The risk of developing hypoglycemia while taking this medication may also be increased for patients taking Mounjaro alongside an insulin secretagogue or insulin. Doses of these medications may need to be adjusted for patients before they start Mounjaro.
Some patients taking Mounjaro have experienced hypersensitivity reactions in clinical studies. Patients should stop taking the medication if these reactions are suspected for them. Renal function should also be monitored in patients taking Mounjaro – especially those with known impairments – as it may lead to serious adverse gastrointestinal reactions and acute kidney injury. This medication also may lead to severe gastrointestinal effects and is not recommended for use in patients with gastrointestinal disease. Those with diabetic retinopathy or a history of it who are taking this medication may also experience related complications. Patients with these histories should be closely monitored if they take this medication. Patients should have regular follow-ups for any potential eye problems if they have diabetic retinopathy. Trials also showed that acute gallbladder disease may occur in some instances when patients are taking Mounjaro.
Use of this medication is not advised for those with a history of Medullary Thyroid Cancer – either personally or in the medical history of someone in their family. People with a history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 (MEN2) should also avoid this medication. Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC) is an uncommon thyroid cancer that develops in the cells responsible for producing calcitonin. MEN 2 is an inherited condition caused by a gene mutation that greatly increases the risk of MTC. Patients should also avoid this medication if they have an allergy to any of the medication’s ingredients.
Patients taking Mounjaro may experience several different side effects over the course of them taking the medication. It is especially common for patients taking GLP-1 agonists like Mounjaro to experience gastrointestinal issues. However, these effects are usually mild (they may be severe in some cases). Some of the most commonly experienced effects include:
Many of these side effects may resolve on their own as the patient’s body becomes more used to their doses of the medication. Patients should see their doctor if these effects worsen or do not go away on their own.
More severe side effects can also occur for some patients taking Mounjaro. These effects are much less likely to occur and require immediate medical attention if they are experienced. These side effects include:
Pancreatitis is a rare but serious possible side effect of Mounjaro. The medication is not recommended for patients who have had pancreatitis for this reason. Anyone who develops serious side effects should get medical help right away.
This medication is dosed weekly. Patients may take a missed dose as long as it is within 96 hours of the original dosing time. Doses should also be taken at least 72 hours apart. Patients who have had more than 96 hours pass since their missed dose should skip the missed dose and proceed with the rest of their dosing schedule as normal. Do not administer more than one dose of Mounjaro within three days.
Patients who accidentally take too much of this medication should contact Poison Control to see the most up-to-date recommendations on how to proceed. An observation period may also be needed since the half-life of this medication is five days long. Patients experiencing signs of an emergency should seek emergency medical attention.
Unused Mounjaro pens should be kept in a temperature between 2°C and 8°C (the equivalent of being between 36°F and 46°F) in refrigeration until their expiration date or at room temperature (up to 30°C or 86°F) for up to 30 days. Mounjaro pens can remain at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 30 days after being used.
Patients using Mounjaro vials may keep their vials that have not been opened yet in the refrigerator at a temperature between 2°C and 8°C or at room temperature under 30°C for up to three weeks (21 days). These products should never be frozen or kept in direct light.
