Cabometyx can cause severe and fatal hemorrhages and gastrointestinal perforations. It also increases the risk of thrombotic events, including arterial and venous thromboembolic events. Patients should be monitored for signs of bleeding, GI perforation, and thromboembolism during treatment.
Certain medical conditions and other factors may prevent you from becoming a good candidate for Cabometyx. It would help to talk to your doctor about your health history before taking Cabometyx. The following factors should be considered.
If you have an allergy to cabozantinib or any other allergy, talk to your doctor or contact us and we can have one of our licensed pharmacists reach out. You should avoid this product if you have allergies or other problems caused by inactive ingredients.
Your doctor should know about your medical history before using this medication, particularly if you have liver disease, recent bleeding (such as coughing up/vomiting blood, bloody/black/tarry stools), high blood pressure, blood vessel problems (such as aneurysms or tears in the blood vessels), or open wounds.
There is a possibility that this drug will make you dizzy. Dizziness can be exacerbated by alcohol or marijuana (cannabis). Until you can do it safely, avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks requiring alertness. You should limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Cannabis (marijuana) use should be discussed with your doctor.
Infections are more likely to occur, or current infections may worsen if you take capozantinib. Avoid people infected with infectious diseases (e.g., chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, flu). In case of infection or further information, contact your doctor.
Before receiving any immunizations or vaccinations, inform your healthcare professional that you are using cabozantinib. Vaccines inhaled through the nose, such as the flu vaccine, should be avoided by anyone recently receiving a live vaccine.
Keep sharp objects away from your skin, such as razors and nail cutters, and avoid contact sports to reduce the risk of getting cut, bruised, or injured.
It is possible to experience mouth or throat pain or sores. Rinse your mouth often with cool water after brushing, avoiding mouthwashes containing alcohol and brushing carefully/gently. Eating soft, moist foods is also recommended.
Cabozantinib can cause severe problems with the jawbone in some people. Your dentist must examine your mouth before you start taking this medication. If you plan to have any dental work done, let your dentist know that you are taking this medication. You can prevent jawbone problems by having regular dental exams and learning to care for your teeth and gums. Consult your dentist and doctor right away if you suffer from jaw pain.
It is important to tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) before having any surgery (especially dental work). If you are scheduled for surgery in three or four weeks, your doctor or dentist may tell you to stop taking cabozantinib. Wounds may heal more slowly with this medication. Be sure to follow all instructions regarding when to stop or restart taking this medication.
Several side effects may occur, including dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, constipation, stomach pain, tiredness, weakness, weight loss, decreased appetite, taste changes, hoarseness, and lightening of hair color. Inform your doctor if any of these effects persist or get worse.
It is possible to experience temporary hair loss. After the treatment is over, average hair growth should resume.
There may be severe side effects associated with this medication. Despite this, your doctor prescribed you this medication because the benefit to you outweighs the risk of side effects. You can reduce your risk with careful monitoring by your doctor.
Cabozantinib may cause serious, possibly fatal side effects in your stomach and abdomen, including perforation of the gut wall and fistulas. There is also a possibility of bleeding that could be fatal. This medication should not be taken if you are experiencing severe bleeding. Symptoms of stomach/intestinal bleeding (bloody, black, tarry stools, abdominal pain, bloody vomit, vomit that looks like coffee grounds), unusual or easy bruising/bleeding, fever, chills, sudden back pain, severe vomiting/diarrhea, coughing, gagging, or choking when you eat or drink, or coughing up blood, should be addressed immediately.
You may experience an increase in blood pressure while taking this medication. Be sure to check your blood pressure regularly and to tell your doctor if the results are high. If your blood pressure is too high, your doctor may prescribe medication to control it.
It is essential to inform your doctor immediately if you experience any severe side effects, such as redness, pain, swelling, blisters, frothy urine, swelling in your hands or feet, cold intolerance, slow heartbeat, signs of low calcium blood levels (such as severe muscle spasms, mental/mood changes, seizures), signs of jawbone problems (such as jaw pain, toothache, gum sores), poor wound healing, or liver problems (such as yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine).
Cabozantinib can also cause severe brain conditions in rare cases. If you experience headaches, seizures, vision changes, confusion, or problems thinking, seek medical attention right away.
A rare risk of serious blood clot problems (such as heart attacks, strokes, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism) may be associated with this medication. Symptoms of severe side effects include chest/jaw/left arm pain, unusual sweating, sudden/severe headache, weakness on one side, confusion, difficulty speaking, sudden vision changes (such as partial/complete blindness), tingling/weakness/numbness in your face/arms/legs, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, sudden dizziness/fainting, and sudden vision changes (such as partial/complete blindness).
You may be less able to fight infections when taking this medication. As a result, you may be more likely to contract a severe infection (rarely fatal) or worsen an existing infection. If you develop any symptoms of infection (such as a sore throat that does not seem to go away, a fever, chills, or a cough), contact your doctor immediately.
Cabozantinib may cause your adrenal glands to malfunction when taken with nivolumab. Feeling unusually tired, losing weight, or losing your appetite are all signs that your adrenal glands may not function properly. Consult your doctor right away.
It is rare for this drug to cause a severe allergic reaction. If you notice any symptoms of an allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling (especially in the face, tongue, and throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
