Zepbound increases the risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis, bacterial sepsis, invasive fungal infections, and infections due to other opportunistic pathogens. Patients should be tested for latent TB before and during treatment. The medication may also increase the risk of malignancies, including lymphoma and other cancers, especially in pediatric patients.
Zepboundâ„¢ is injected under the skin. The medication is slowly absorbed compared to intravenous injections but much faster than oral medication.
As a GLP-1 agonist, Zepboundâ„¢ helps lower blood sugar levels and promote weight loss. It suppresses the appetite and alters the absorption that happens in the stomach. It slows the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine, which allows patients to feel full for long periods.
Zepboundâ„¢ is expected to be a long-term treatment. Results will not happen immediately, but the effects can be dramatic. It is important to note that this medication should be used alongside proper diet and exercise to maximize desired results.
Individual results vary per patient. During the clinical trials, patients who have taken a 5mg dose of Zepboundâ„¢ weekly after 72 weeks have lost 35 lbs. on average. Meanwhile, patients who were given a placebo lost 5.3 lbs. around the same time. As a result of the trials, those who took higher doses of Zepboundâ„¢ lost more weight:
Dosage |
Average Weight Loss After 72 Weeks |
5 mg | 35.5 lbs. |
10 mg | 48. 9 lbs. |
15 mg | 52 lbs. |
Those who participated in the trials lost 21% of their body weight. Subjects who did not have diabetes and were given 15 mg per week lost 18% while those with diabetes lost 12%.
Zepboundâ„¢ comes in a single-use injection pen that is subcutaneously injection. Each pen is a single dose. The injection sites can either be on the upper arm, abdomen, or thigh. Rotate to a different injection site for each dose taken. It can be administered at any time of the day, with or without a meal.
Patients should remember to take their injection dose. If a dose is missed, inject the missed dose as soon as possible. Then continue with the regular scheduled doses. Zepboundâ„¢ is recommended to be injected at least three days apart.
If a patient has injected too much Zepbound™, they should notify their doctor right away or call America’s Poison Centers at 800-222-1222. If the symptoms are severe and require emergency medical treatment, call 911 or head to the nearest emergency room.
The use of Zepboundâ„¢ requires a prescription from a doctor. As of today, there is no generic counterpart available.
Remove Zepboundâ„¢ from the refrigerator. Check if the pen is not frozen, cloudy, or has particles. It should be colorless or slightly yellow. Air bubbles may be observed in the solution, but it is normal. Also, check if the pen is the correct dose and if it is not expired.
Before injecting, keep your hands clean by washing. Once an injection site has been chosen, do not unlock the pen until the clear base is on the skin and ready to inject. Pull the gray cap off and discard it right away. Do not replace the cap or touch the needle.
Place the base flat on the skin of the injection site and unlock it by turning the lock ring. Press and hold the purple button for ten seconds. Listen for the first click which indicates the injection has started and then a second click which means that the injection is completed.
After the injection process, place the used pen in a sharps disposal container. Do not simply discard it in the household garbage bin.

The dosage of Zepbound™ depends on the doctor’s prescription. It is based on how well the patient’s condition responds to the drug or any risks to side effects.
Zepboundâ„¢ is available in six doses:
The recommended starting dose of the medication is 2.5 mg. You will take this dose for the first 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, your doctor will increase the dose to 5 mg. You will take the 5 mg dose for another 4 weeks. At that point, your doctor will determine if the 5 mg dose should be continued or if an increase is needed.Â
If an increase is necessary, the dose can be raised by increments of 2.5 mg, but doses should not be increased more frequently than every 4 weeks. This gradual increase allows your body to adjust to the medication and reduces the risk of side effects. The goal is to find the lowest effective dose that provides the desired results for you. Your doctor will monitor your progress and make dose adjustments as needed over time.
