Humalog Junior KwikPen can cause severe hypoglycemia, leading to seizures, unconsciousness, and death. Humalog KwikPen Junior is a pen that must be injected underneath the skin (subcutaneously). To do this:

1. Clean the tip of the pen with an alcohol swab and attach the needle.
2. Choose the required dose.
3. Clean the skin injection site with alcohol and swab
4. Pinch the skin and inject into the fold (pinching the skin may not be necessary if you are using a short needle)
5. Wait a few days before injecting into the same spot again

If symptoms occur, they should receive immediate attention to stabilize blood sugar levels. Treating low blood sugar is extremely important and can be done by eating a source of sugar, such as glucose tablets, a tablespoon of honey or jam, jelly beans or lifesavers, a tablespoon of sugar, or a non-diet soft drink.

Speak to your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms of low blood sugar as it may be related to your diet or will require a modification to dosage.

Other side effects with Humalog Junior KwikPen include:

– Headache

– Hunger

– Irritability

– Palpitations

– Cold sweats

– Shakiness

– Rapid breathing, shortness of breath, or wheezing

– Allergic reactions can be severe (whole-body reactions can happen). If this occurs, get medical attention immediately

– Shortness of breath or wheezing

– Low potassium levels (hypokalemia)

– Increased heartbeat

– Swelling of hands and feet

– Heart failure if taking insulin with certain medications such as TZDs

– Rash, itching, skin thickening, or pits at the injection site (lipodystrophy)

Storing Unused Pens

Store unused pens in the refrigerator between 2°C – 8°C. Do not freeze medication or use if frozen.

If the Pen has been kept refrigerated, unused Pens may be used until their expiration date

Storing In-use Pens

Store the Pen you are currently using at room temperature [up to 30°C] and away from heat and light.

Discard pens you are using after 28 days, even if it still has insulin left in it

Dispose of used Needles in a sharps container or a rigid plastic container with a secure lid. Do not throw Needles directly into your household trash.

Dispose of the used Pen as instructed by your healthcare professional after you have removed the Needle.

Do not recycle the filled sharps container.

Ask your healthcare professional about options available to dispose of the sharps container properly.

If you can not remove the Pen Cap, gently twist the cap back and forth, and then pull the cap straight off. 

If the Dose Knob is hard to push, pushing the dose knob more slowly will make it easier to inject. It also may be because your needle may be blocked. If this is the case, put on a new needle and prime the pen.

You may have dust, food, or liquid inside the pen. Throw the pen away and get a new pen.
