Humalog (Mix 50) KwikPens Labeled Warning

Humalog (Mix 50) KwikPens Labeled Warning

Humalog Mix50 KwikPen can cause severe hypoglycemia, which can result in seizures, unconsciousness, and death. Patients should be closely monitored for signs of hypoglycemia, and their insulin dosage should be carefully adjusted. The medication should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Humalog (Mix 50) KwikPens Precautions

Humalog (Mix 50) KwikPens Precautions

Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is the most common adverse effect experienced by insulin users. Blood glucose monitoring is recommended for all patients with diabetes. Uncorrected hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic reactions can cause loss of consciousness, coma, or even death.

Humalog Mix50 KwikPens should be given within 15 minutes before a meal.

Humalog Mix50 KwikPens are white suspension and should be administered by subcutaneous injection only. Humalog Mix50 must not be administered intravenously.

Any change of insulin regimen should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision. Changes in purity, strength, brand (manufacturer), type (regular, NPH, etc.), species (beef, pork, beef-pork, human), and method of manufacture (recombinant DNA versus animal-source insulin) may result in the need for a change in dosage.

Mixing Humalog Mix50 with either animal insulins or insulin preparations produced by other manufacturers is not recommended.

Patients taking Humalog Mix50 may require a change in dosage from that used with other insulins. If an adjustment is needed, it may occur with the first dose or over several weeks.

Before Use

Before Use

Wash your hands and read instructions that come prepackaged with Humalog Mix50 KwikPens (also similar instructions with vial usage). Use a clean needle (needles not included) and prime your Humalog Mix50 KwikPens. They clear any air bubbles and check insulin comes out. Clean the area where you will be injecting the pen, and do not inject it into a muscle or vein. Inject under the skin as instructed at least half an inch (1cm) from the last place injected. Leave the pen inside the skin for 5 seconds after injection to ensure that you have received the entire dose. Do not rub the area you have just injected.

After injection, unscrew the needle from the Humalog Mix50 KwikPens using the outer needle cap to keep the insulin sterile and stop leaking. This keeps air from entering the pen and the needle from clogging. Replace the cap on your pen.

Whenever you use the Humalog Mix50 KwikPens, you must use a new needle. You can see how much insulin you have left by holding the pen pointed straight up. The scale on the cartridge displays how many units are left. Do not reuse KwikPen again once it is empty. Dispose of the pen as per your pharmacist’s instructions.

To get over a mild insulin overdose, eat glucose tablets, candy, or a sugary drink if your blood sugar levels drop too low. Follow this by eating a meal, getting some rest, or as directed by your doctor. A glucagon injection can treat severe hypoglycemia; however, you should still consume glucose or sugar after injection. If your body does not respond, then seek medical attention immediately.

A high blood sugar spike may occur if you forget to take your insulin or less than you require. Be sure to check your blood sugar. If not treated, hypoglycemia can lead to side effects that can even be fatal.

Always keep a spare pen and cartridge available if your KwikPen is unusable or damaged to avoid hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Always carry proof that you have diabetes and take glucose tablets.

If you stop using Humalog Mix50, you may experience high blood sugar levels. Do not change your insulin unless instructed by your doctor.

If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Usage

Usage

Your health care provider may recommend Humalog Mix50 KwikPens in combination with longer-acting insulin (such as Fiasp). Before using insulin, you should review the leaflet included with the medication and follow your pharmacists or doctors’ directions which may be individualized for your specific needs.

Monitor your blood sugar levels often by using a glucose testing kit.

You should generally use Humalog Mix50 within 15 minutes of a meal.

Even though your insulin therapy well manages your blood sugar levels, you may not detect warning signs of blood sugar levels dropping too low.

Carefully schedule your meals, how often you work out, and how hard you work out.

Do not share pens as they can lead to disease transmission; only use the pen prescribed to you.

Humalog Mix50 should be taken 15 minutes before every meal or within 15 minutes of starting your meal; however, your doctor may have other directions to follow.

Humalog Mix50 KwikPens should be injected under the skin (subcutaneously). Your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse should demonstrate how to inject.

Inspect pen before use. It should not be used if it appears to have particles or clumps of material floating around.

You may need to modify your insulin dosage if you are taking any of the following medications: contraceptives, steroids, thyroid hormone replacement therapy, oral hypoglycemics, acetylsalicylic acid, octreotide, sulpha antibiotics, beta2 stimulants or beta-blockers, some antidepressants, some angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers and danazol.

Side Effects

Side Effects

Side effects are unwanted responses. Like any medication, there may be side effects; however, others may experience them differently or not at all. The following side effects associated with the Humalog Mix50 KwikPen have been experienced by 1% of patients taking this medication. Although these side effects may be rare, they can lead to more severe problems if not appropriately managed.

System allergies are rare but can occur. Symptoms may include: rashes all over the body, difficulty breathing/wheezing, sudden drop in blood pressure, increased heartbeat, sweating, confusion, anxiety, dizziness, slurred speech/difficulty speaking, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, nausea, headache, hunger, nervousness, trembling and numbness in fingers, tongue or lips.

If you experience severe allergic reactions such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing/wheezing, painful skin rashes, or unconsciousness, seek medical attention.

Many of the side effects can be managed and go away with time.

If you are concerned about any of the listed side effects or experience any of them, speak with your doctor. Your pharmacist may provide additional instructions to manage side effects better.

If you experience any side effects, including ones not listed, you should check with your doctor.

Drug Interactions

Drug Interactions

Insulin requirements may increase if you take other drugs with hyperglycemic activity, such as oral contraceptives (for example, birth control pills, injections, and patches), corticosteroids, or thyroid replacement therapy. Insulin requirements may be decreased in the presence of agents such as oral antidiabetic agents, salicylates (aspirin), sulfa antibiotics, certain antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), beta-blockers, alcohol, ACE inhibitors, and angiotensin II receptor blockers. Always discuss any medications you are taking with your doctor.

The use of thiazolidinediones (such as rosiglitazone and pioglitazone), alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents (including insulin), has been associated with heart failure and swelling of the lower extremities. Please get in touch with your physician immediately if you develop symptoms of shortness of breath, fatigue, exercise intolerance, or swelling of the lower extremities while you are on these agents.

Please note Humalog is not Humulin. They are two different insulins with similar names and can easily be mistaken.

Inspection

Inspection

Do not use a cartridge or Humalog Mix50 KwikPens if clumps of material are present or if solid white particles stick to the bottom or wall of the cartridge, giving it a frosted appearance. A cartridge or KwikPen that is cracked or broken should be returned to the place of purchase for an exchange. If you notice anything unusual in the appearance or effect of your insulin, consult your healthcare professional.

Do not use a Humalog Mix50 KwikPens after the expiration date is stamped on the label.

Dispose of used needles in a puncture-resistant container or as directed by your healthcare professional. Dispose of used pens as instructed by your healthcare professional and without the needle attached.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Humalog Mix50 KwikPens can be used in pregnancy if clinically indicated. Data on a large number of exposed pregnancies do not show any adverse effect of Humalog Mix50 on pregnancy or the health of the fetus/newborn.

Reasonable control of diabetes is crucial for you and your unborn baby. Pregnancy may make managing your diabetes more difficult. Consult your doctor if you are planning to have a baby, are pregnant, or are nursing a baby.

Overdose

Overdose

Hypoglycemia (too little glucose in the blood) is one of the most frequent adverse events experienced by insulin users. It can be brought by the following list:

1. Missing or delaying meals
2. Taking too much insulin
3. Exercising or working more than usual
4. An infection or illness (especially with diarrhea or vomiting)
5. A change in the body’s need for insulin
6. Diseases of the adrenal, pituitary, or thyroid gland, or progression of kidney or liver disease
7. Interactions with other drugs that lower blood glucose, such as oral hypoglycemics, salicylates, sulfa antibiotics, and certain antidepressants
8. Consumption of alcoholic beverages

Storage

Storage

Before first use, Humalog Mix50 cartridges or prefilled pens should be stored in a refrigerator between 2° and 8°C. Do not freeze. Do not expose to excessive heat or sunlight. The pen and cartridge of Humalog Mix50 that you are currently using should not be refrigerated but should be kept as cool as possible (below 30°C) and away from direct heat and light. Do not use Humalog Mix50 if it has been frozen. Cartridges or prefilled pens in use or not refrigerated should be discarded after 28 days, even if they still contain Humalog Mix50.
